Finally, I believe without a doubt, 1984 should certainly be required reading for all programmers - a single read is worth a great many 'ethics for technologists' courses.
1984 changed the way I perceive language and culture permanently. The notion that if certain words no longer exist in the language, then the associated idea will disappear from the culture was Earth-shaking to me.
It profoundly changed how I view the government and technology. It gave me a strong respect for what a government can do, and how our reality is not just our naked perception, but it is what others want us to perceive.
Changed my perception about the state, our society, people's beliefs and media's influence. I was fascinated how Orwell was able to accurately portray the characteristics of totalitarian and authoritarian states.
The clear warnings of the evils of socialism are just as valuable today.
