I see a lot of people here recommending A Random Walk Down Wall Street, which is a good book, but you're going to finish it and say "This investing stuff is too complicated for me. I think I'll just put my money in index funds."

Good reading to get an understanding for this are "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" and papers by Eugene Fama (EMH will be covered by any intro to finance book as well).

A Random Walk Down Wall Street: I got much more interested in personal finance this year, and definitely recommend this book as a stepping stone for learning about investing.

The first and best book on investing that you should read: A Random Walk Down Wall Street (http://www.amazon.com/Random-Walk-Down-Wall-Street/dp/0393062457). This book has great investing advice; is funny, interesting, and well-written; and clearly explains what's going on behind different investment approaches.

Random Walk and Black Swan are two good reads. Even if you end up not agreeing with the two's takes, they'll make you sufficiently skeptical of how well a book claims to explain the industry, which is a good position to approach it from.

I also recommend accompanying Bogleheads Guide it with A Random Walk Down Wall Street (http://www.amazon.com/Random-Walk-Down-Wall-Street/dp/0393330338). It ranks with me as another "life changing" book.
