What hooked me about the series were two things: 1) It was very, /very/ weird and 2) it often times felt like the characters had no power.

Anhilliation - Fish out of water like story of exploring a mysterious, horrific, environment (2 sequels drag on for too much after this one though)
A clear-eyed and direct novel about the meaning and measure of individual human life in our modern age -- and yet it concedes nothing to modern literary or social fashions, but instead goes for universality and timelessness.
Vandemeer really has a way with words but specifically in this novel he manages to describe what I though was indescribable.
Annihilation - by Jeff Vandermeer was a big treat. I like ambient music, and I'd call this an ambient book.
