Reading this series I realized how much depth, detail, and subtlety can really do for a work. It blew me away.
But it seemed to me then and still seems to me now that they are literature, an extended meditation on what it means to be a man.
I often get that feeling of "enjoying the beauty of the writing" with Patrick O'Brian, who was pretty prolific.
Also, do yourself a favor and pick up the Aubrey / Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian. You will not regret it.
I've only read the first four, but fell in love with the writing.
