Code Complete

I can't say enough good things about this. I have kept referring to it in the months since I read it for the first time.

There is so very, very much they don't know and Code Complete helps fill in a lot of the gaps. Most usefully it helps instill the idea that it's important to use practices that are backed up by evidence and that there is a lot more to learn when you get out of school.

For style & technical guidelines, I think Code Complete is still a great book, or the Pragmatic Programmer.

It does give have a lot of sound advice. But, IMO, it has some big problems. First is that it gives the false impression that there is a lot of empirical evidence on what works on software engineering.
