These books are very well written and billed as a 'techno-thriller'. I think they are also near-term science fiction, and have a lot of very interesting ideas.
They display an enormous amount of thinking about how social networks and the massively increased availability of data about our lives are changing the ways we interact with each other.
It's one of the few that stuck with me and made me fall in love with "near-future sci-fi".
Things at the bleeding edge of technology that are technically possible today, and the book is written in today's world (not tomorrow's), but just hasn't been done yet.
It would have altered my worldview fundamentally if I had read it at a younger age.
The technology is amazingly well researched and believable, and the writing is entertaining and fun.

Sprinkle in mysteries that play out in both reality and MMORPGs, lots of interesting devices, and a terrifying peek at what a technology-driven global economic meltdown could look like, and you have the basis for these books.
