This book profoundly changed how I think about application performance and data. It describes so much about different kinds databases and query languages, that now I feel like I've got a big picture view of the whole industry.

IMO a better approach would be to read Designing Data Intensive Applications (mentioned a million times on HN) which is more like a high-level map of the field. The references in DDIA are also a goldmine of information.
