I think if you read this book you will be able to understand modern Molecular Biology papers.
All of these books are extraordinary in their sheer ability to organize thousands of small details into thematic narratives of how life operates.
That said, they are a great guide for non biologists into how experts think things work.
On several occasions, Kay has mentioned Molecular Biology of the Cell as an outstanding example of how modern technology can be used to create textbooks in the aid of comprehension rather than spectacle.
