In general, the book is about realizing that you have a choice in most things - even things like whether you want to earn money to feed your kids. Likewise, it's about eliminating the language of obligation from your internal dialogues.
Essentially, this book has been teaching me how to human for the past year.
If you want to learn the language of design by committee, "Nonviolent Communication" by Marshall Rosenberg is the book that the rest of the committee is playing from.
Really wakes you up to the domination language that rules our interactions and provides an alternative framework.
This book teaches a great way to communicate, but for me, it has also helped me think about my feelings and how I can communicate those feelings better.
Non-violent Communication helped me to understand there is a shared underpinning to the experience of being human--that emotions are fundamental, and that there are some universal human needs.
I believe the world would be a better place if more people read this book.
"Nonviolent Communication" preaches compassion and empathy in communication, and it has lessons that apply beyond the boardroom.
