Set in the near-ish future, a big asteroid comes whizzing into the solar system. Looks weird, so we investigate. It's a total page turner, and reads like an adventure/mystery. Highly recommended.
It is absolutely phenomenal "hard sci-fi" with coherent science and a very cool story.
One of, if not Clarke's best. It's short for a sci-fi book and almost impossible not to like.
Probably my favorite Arthur Clarke novel. The plot may not be so interesting but the ideas presented make up for it.
But 2001 and pretty much all of his books through Rendezvous With Rama shared the same sensibilities and were uniformly excellent.
