Revelation Space/Chasm City/Redemption Ark/Absolution Gap - Alastair Reynolds (love the series but it is long!)
Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds: really creative world-building in a galactic society and an engaging, twisting plotine.
But there are astoundig amounts of fascinating ideas and theories in the books it's well worth the read - it became one of my favourite sci-fi next to Solaris.
The first book (Revelation Space) set a very nice backdrop for the character development and story in the 2nd book (Chasm City).
I also read Revelation Space this year. I liked it, but it definitely felt like it dragged on.
