I cannot recommend 'The Society of Mind' enough. This was my first book before diving into Cognitive Science.
For more big-picture stuff, Marvin Minsky's Society of Mind is great, and Hofstader's Gödel, Escher, Bach is a classic too.
And, in many ways, much more powerful looks at "mind" are Minsky's "Society of Mind" and "The Emotion Machine".
