Art of Electronics is one of the few books that realizes that actual chips and actual specifications are important to electronics designs. It has the unfortunate effect of going obsolete as new chips come out, but its one of the few books that digs into specification sheets and tells you what's important and how to read them.
As a teenager, I had messed around with guitar amplifiers and effects pedals, and had made some gadgets by copying circuits from magazines. AoE (plus the professor who taught from it of course) made my understanding of transistors and op amps click.
The Art of Electronics - Horowitz and Hill - All the nitty gritty details you'll need if you're to be a good electronics designer
This book's niche is in building the intuitive understanding that is often lacking after the typically highly mathematical treatment seen in 200-level circuit theory courses. It's a great transition from "ok, I can manipulate the equations for a circuit with one or two transistors" to being able to design complete, practical electronic devices.
The Art of Electronics taught me most of what I know about electronics.
As a software guy who sometimes is involved in embedded systems, having a good understanding of what's going on at the resistor/capacitor/transistor level would have helped a lot.
It's how I learned electronics, so I can't knock it too much.
