But Banks makes me yearn for the future. Demonstrates what wonders could be possible if we fast forward technological development forward 10k years. The magnificent intellects of the artificial minds that govern the society hits me in my soul. What a wonderful idea.
And for anybody who hasn't yet, Culture Series by Iain m. Banks. I don't personally love the very first entry, Consider Phlebas, but everything from Player of Games onward is just gold.
The culture novels by Iain M. Banks are also amazing, ship names in particular, but also themes.

They are cheesy in spots but the quality of the universe that Banks builds over 9 books makes up for it. Sort of like a novel version of Star Trek. I wish I could read them again for the first time.
