The first three books of Jack Vance’s Dying Earth series are great, but particularly The Eyes of the Overworld, which I was surprised to find was hilarious.
The book sometimes felt like a poetic tale, with nature and nostalgia as strong themes, though it was also quite brutal.
Later on in the relationship I'll tell them my actual favorite book, "A Canticle for Leibowitz", or "Neuromancer", or "The Dying Earth" (my opinion changes based on my mood).
Jack Vance, the forgotten grand master. I love his stuff as well.
