The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin is one of the best scifi/fantasy (it is hard the classify) novels I have read in recent years.
That said, the first was great, one of the best fantasy books I've read in a long time.
Breaks a lot of core writing rules, and tries hard to do things that are rarely seen in the genre.
