This book stresses the idea of starting with customer interviews before you build anything and how to ask questions of prospective customers to get meaningful information when people's bias is to just tell you, "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea," even though they'd never pay money for it.
I believe the main lesson from the book is: - Don't talk to people about your ideas - Ask people about their actual use cases and frustrations - Figure out where they're struggling, investing effort and money. Let them talk - Don't ask people about your idea and don't ask them if they want it or not. You're only trying to validate the problem.
It illustrates in the most logical progression a set of easily implementable steps to ensure that your own confirmation bias doesn’t sink your company.
If you understand The Mom Test and apply its knowledge, you're ready to start.
The worlds information is all on the internet. If you don't need the credential, the connections, or the learning structure, everything is free and can be consumed in a perfectly personalized way.
We learn from tons of lean books that customer discovery is crucial to not build the wrong thing, but this book gives very practical ways to do that well.
The Mom Test, how to talk to customers & learn if your business is a good idea when everyone is lying to you by Rob Fitzpatrick (worst title ever, book is great)
