It covers the most widely known Western philosophers, one philosopher per chapter, and was written for a mass audience.
But they introduced me to so many different ideas that led to so many more ideas and lines of reasoning throughout the rest of my life.
A better read might be Will Durant's "The Story of Philosophy".
I have such a huge attachment to the Durants, they kept me company on many a long night.
definitively a good book to get some background in the history of philosophy.
