For a feeling of what the early Soviet Union was like, I highly recommend We the Living by Ayn Rand. If you don't like her politics, I still recommend it to understand exactly what it was that she is reacting against.
But she does draw very heavily on her own personal experiences to draw that time and place as accurately as she could.
If you want to understand what drove Ayn Rand to the extremes then "We the Living" is probably the best explanation there is.
